It was July 24, 2010, and I just published my first book. I had big hopes for this book. I was going on a book tour, I would have literary agents calling me to sign with them, sign-on bonuses were going to be deposited into my bank account, and everyone would know my name. None of that happened. Why?
I never wanted to be a writer as I was growing up. I thought about many careers such as dancer, lawyer, accountant, teacher, cosmetologist, and business owner, but being a writer was not on my list. As a child, I often stayed to myself unless I was outside with the neighborhood kids. When I was alone in my room, I played with my dolls while making up stories in my head. I had a big imagination. I would create these stories in my head that could have easily been a book. It wasn’t until I was 28 years old when I wondered if I could write a book.
I was always a big reader growing up and as an adult. As I got older, I was into urban fiction. I loved reading these types of books because it allowed me to travel to a different world. During the summer of 2018, I was on vacation. I wasn’t traveling anywhere during this time. I sat in my apartment one day, and I asked myself if I could write a book. Even as an adult, I was still making up stories in my head. Especially when a boyfriend pissed me off. I would create a story about what I was going to do about the relationship I was in. My thoughts were planned out for at least five years. I know crazy right, but that’s how I processed things.
I started writing my story, and it kept changing because I couldn’t take the thoughts from my head and place them on paper. It took a while, and I finally made it past chapter 1. Two years later and I had my first book ready to be published. The only problem was, I had no idea what to do. There was nothing out there to guide me on this process. I was lost, and it showed. During my first year, I probably sold 20 books, maybe 30. One day I decided I was going to figure this out, and I did. After years of research and testing various solutions out, I finally figured this industry out.
